Exploring the Rhône Delta: New Research in Action

From March to July, the Rhône Delta coastline is under close scientific scrutiny. Thanks to the dedicated work of master’s students from the COAST and STPE programs at CEREGE, new insights are emerging about this highly dynamic coastal environment.

The research covers a wide range of topics essential for understanding past, present, and future changes in the delta:

  • Clémentine Alberque is identifying low-lying areas within the Rhône Delta dunes using high-resolution LiDAR data, helping to map areas most vulnerable to flooding.
  • Hadjer Hachichi is investigating the historical and projected movements of the Rhône Delta shoreline, tracing changes from 1872 to the present and modeling future trends.
  • Mathis Azabant is developing criteria to better predict dune erosion during storm events, contributing to improved coastal risk assessments.
  • Alexandru Berbecariu is leveraging high temporal-resolution satellite data and Google Earth Engine to analyze how the deltaic shoreline evolves under the pressures of climate change.

You’ll have the opportunity to meet these talented young researchers and learn more about their findings during their thesis defenses, scheduled for June and/or September. Stay tuned — exciting results are on the horizon!
