CIVIS BIP 2025: Climate and Landscape Change in the Mediterranean

The latest edition of the CIVIS Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) has come to a successful close, continuing a tradition of international collaboration and hands-on training for young geoscientists.

The course was co-organised by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), University of Bucharest (Romania), Stockholm University (Sweden), Aix-Marseille Université (France), and Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (Austria), in collaboration with the Geopark of Kefalonia–Ithaca and with the support of the Ionian Islands Regional Authority.

This year’s programme focused on the interplay of landscape, tectonics, and climate change in the Mediterranean region, combining field activities, lectures, and cultural exchange. Beyond academic training, the BIP fostered new connections, collaborations, and friendships among participants, strengthening the CIVIS community.

The 2025 edition was dedicated to the memory of Paolo Pirazzoli, who co-organised a similar field course exactly a decade ago, building on years of collaborative research on tectonics and sea-level change in the Mediterranean.

For many of the students, this experience marks the beginning of a new journey — some may return as future MSc or PhD candidates, while others will join as research collaborators. Whatever path they take, the network and knowledge built through CIVIS will continue to guide their growth as the next generation of geoscientists.
